Why it matters
A short amount of time makes a visible impact, especially on the main routes in and out of the village. These events are practical, sociable, and genuinely satisfying.
What to bring
Please come with your car if possible.
While not essential, if you have them, please bring:
High-visibility jacket or vest
Gloves
Litter pickers
If you don’t have these, some equipment will be available to borrow, and strong collection bags will be provided. Please wear robust clothing and suitable footwear.
Insurance and participation
This activity involves a level of risk, particularly on busier roads.
The Windlesham Society has approved public liability cover for members only
If you are not a member, you will be asked to sign a disclaimer on arrival
Young people may participate from 16 years and above
What happens on the day
You’ll be registered for the pick
We will take a quick group photo
A short safety briefing will be given
Equipment will be allocated to those who need it
People will be paired up (especially if you arrive alone)
Roads will be allocated and most pairs will drive out to the agreed areas
Litter picking begins
Return back to the rendezvous point with your litter bag for drop off
Safety guidance
For safety, we work in pairs:
One person focuses on picking and bag-carrying
The other keeps watch for traffic, especially on roads without pavements
If a bag becomes too heavy, leave it in a visible roadside spot and either collect it later or inform the organiser on return so it can be collected.
After the pick
Please return to the Field of Remembrance car park with as much collected litter as possible. We handle the litter from that point. If you’d like to continue conversations at the café afterwards, you’ll be very welcome.
