How A Letter of Frustration Became a Village Tradition

We’ve all had that moment. You’re taking a peaceful stroll down one of Windlesham’s lanes or through our green spaces, enjoying the local scenery, when a discarded crisp packet, coffee cup, or plastic bottle catches your eye. It’s a familiar spark of frustration that almost every resident has felt at some point.

For local resident George, that spark came a few years ago. But rather than just shaking his head and walking on, he transformed that irritation into something that has quickly become a cornerstone of our community calendar.

Starting the litterpick “ was quite simply down to the re-channelling of my anger about the local litter problem into doing something proactive about it,” George recalls. “This began with a letter to the Windlesham Society suggesting that I might lead a litter pick...”

That single letter set the wheels in motion. In March 2024, George led Windlesham’s very first official Society Litter Pick. What started as one proactive idea swiftly turned into a bi-annual tradition, taking place every six months as a seasonal reset for our village streets, hedgerows, and parks.

Now, here we are, about to have our next Litter Pick.

🧹 The Next Clean-Up: Saturday, 5th September

In just a few Saturdays' time, we will be gathering once again to give the Windlesham lanes, roads and hedgerows some TLC and a tidy up.

Whether you’ve joined us before or have been thinking about getting involved for the first time, your help makes a tangible difference. It’s surprising just how much ground a group of neighbours can cover in just an hour or so, and how satisfying it is to see the immediate result.

• When: Saturday, 5th September from 1:45pm at the Field of Remembrance car park

• What to bring: Just yourself! Equipment including litter pickers, high-vis, and gloves are provided, but if you already have any kit please bring along, its a big help.

• Who it’s for: Everyone aged 16+! Families, long-time residents, and newcomers are all warmly welcome.

It just shows us, one good idea and a bit of teamwork can change the look and feel of our village for the better. Join us on the 5th September and help us keep that momentum going!
